Crowdfunding for Non-Profits – Tips for Spreading the Word

Crowdfunding for Non-Profits – Tips for Spreading the Word

Time is money!

There are a handful of common misconceptions in regards to crowdfunding, but none more common that the idea that beginning a crowdfunding campaign somehow opens the monetary flood gates, or that money begins growing on trees all around you. It seems like common sense, but it really happens.

Non-profits are without a doubt the genre of start-ups that tend to utilize crowdfunding campaigns the most often for their endeavors, and just like the standards set for business crowdfunding, non-profits have a set of guidelines and structures that should be followed to ensure success.

These tips will help you effectively manage your non-profit’s crowdfunding efforts and outcomes.

  • Create real connections and have real conversations: Nothing turns people off more that feeling as though their money is the only thing on your mind. Non-profits have unique stories and worthwhile missions that should captivate potential donors. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone to convey your purpose and start a dialogue with donors. Creating a real and tangible connection with someone will help give them a sense of security and personal connection to the mission that you are so passion about. Be willing to share your goals and your feelings before just asking for money.
  • Utilize FREE promotional platforms: We hear it time and time again that social media is valuable for any growing brand, but what is important for non-profits is to use these social mediaresources in ways that spark deeper and more meaningful interactions as well as a further outreach for the mission at hand.
    • Facebook & Twitter: Consider creating badges or tabs that can be incorporated into a fan or friend’s own Facebook page for their followers to see. This is viral marketing at its finest and will allow growth without being invasive with your postings.
    • YouTube: Create unique content and videos that can catch the attention of potential investors and donors. Using this site as a resource could be the push you need to raise your dollar amount and start your mission.
    • Do all you can to spread the word: It’s time to put your public relations hat on and get busy spreading the word about your non-profit and it’s mission! Consider drafting press releases to send to the local newspapers and popular bloggers, partnering with community leadership for events, or even putting on your own community outreach projects throughout the area. Anyway to get the word out is valuable and even one person is another set of eyes or ears that has become aware of you missions and goals. See everything as an opportunity.

Crowdfunding campaigns in general will benefit from these ideas, but non-profits specifically should share their stories using this structure to help ensure the success of the campaign.
